Joelle and I spent the entire day today wondering around the city of Singapore and to sum it up, it is just like Chicago.
Joelle and I spend the entire day laughing because we are so frustrated with how much we stick out like sore thumbs. That's all that has been on our mind for the last three months was to find ways to blend in with our surroundings, because the best way to travel to a foreign country.
Boy...we stink at it.
Let me paint you the picture. Two 5'9-ers, one that pass a 34DD, one with blonde hair, matching black pants, over-the-should packs (like the 2008 version of a fanny pack), baseball caps and our favorite - the Tevas - amongst barely 5'1, not more then 103lbs, business causally dressed Asians going to there 9-5 office job. We must of pulled out a map at every corner, walked through the wrong door, up the wrong escalator, try to withdraw money from a phone machine, pulled out hand sanitizer immediately after getting off the MRT (their version or the "L"). The only two people on the whole island sweating so much that it looks like we just walked through a monsoon. We were looked at, laughed at and just plain felt silly.
So...we're going to try to work on that a little.
I think the whole reason, however, boils down to the fact that people in other countries... you ready for this...are just like us! They were jeans and flip flops and go to lunch with their co-workers and drink Starbucks and talk on their phones and read the paper. I guess there was no reason to think we would be trekking through some extremely strange land...it was like another day in Chicago.
Now, see if I feel this way a month from now.

Hey JilJil,
Once again, as I read your blog I laugh and cry at the same time. How absolutely awesome for you two to be going on such a grand adventure. I am very lucky to have such wonderful nieces that are experiencing life to the fullest and I get to go along for the ride, even if only in my head. Thanks for letting me see the world through your eyes. I can't help but laugh/cry thinking of you two beauties in such a different place. I admire you both so much. Keep the updates coming. XOXOXOXO Aunt Disha
Just found your last two posts. I was beginning to wonder if you were on this "trek" with your sister. Glad to read your blog updates and that you are proving your "old rosha" wrong. You are both awesome and obviously learning a lot on the way.(your both writing a whole lot better than any thing I proofed for you in college) Love you both bunches rosha
Hi,
It's your godfather. Don't talk to any strangers!!! Like your mother I to am not getting much sleep. We are thinking about you often and praying for a wonderful trip and safe return. Be smart and be careful. We love you both and are so proud of you.
To bad James wasn't a little older. We would have sent him to watch over you. He just got his first ticket for running a stop sign. He may be joining you soon because I'm going to kick him there, maybe you can pick him up on your way home.
Take care
Love,Uncle Jamey and Aunt Kathy
I am told that Singapore models itself after the west, so maybe it's just a good way to break into this whole adventure slowly.
I am also told that earth tones and earthy scarves help cover the blonde, but not sure what to do about the height - and don't forget your eyes and faces! Those will still look very unique.
Have fun and keep the posts coming!
Shannon
Now Uncle Jamie!!!! Just a stop sign??? Patience. Don't talk to strangers???? Come on be real. But I do like Shannon's suggestion of a head and face scarf perhaps in some areas. Could you walk on your knees for the height thing??
Good heavens- Jillian has turned into quite the philosopher! I am proud to say I knew her when she was still in middle school.
Loved reading all about the start of the big adventure and I greatly admire your sense of adventure.
Have a blast!

JIL JIL!!!!
Ale and Margs here. We love you!!! Thanks for my shout out with the self contained underwater breathing apparatus dance skills. I love your blog. I am about to cry reading it because i am seriously so excited for you. I am doing all this research on going to Buenos Aires. Anyway, I am so excited about your adventures. Ale pretty much told you everything going on here at P Belly's so that's that. Ratatat. Keep being wild and crazy out there but stay out of scary troubles.
XOXO
